Controlled mayhem. Love it. The basic idea was so good that it was difficult for us to stop writing it and call it finished.

This piece could have resulted in infinite outcomes, each as satisfying as the next.

I was unsure on Crash and Burn at first but Greame was all the way with this track, I sat back on it and let the Chaps pull it together. Just as well as it certainly establishes the album by the end of the first chorus.

Instead of the second verse having lyrics we went with Niall’s guitar hook dancing around and deserving of the space it occupies.

Then more mayhem is let loose with very literal lyrics giving all you need to understand what is taking place in the story line of
XXV.

The intro is manic, from the staccato beginning to the next section where it sounds like the drums are falling down the stairs!

Then follows a nice bass, drums and guitar groove. Then into the mad end section with triplet patterns and developed onto Double kicks. Listen out for the keyboard dog barks…”bark”, “bark”, “bark” over the end section

Originally this track started life entitled “Piano anticipation” which was just a musical doodle I had been toying with for a while really but we thought it had potential and it is now one of my favorite tracks.

I get to go mad on the guitar at the end…which is nice.

Let’s face it, you want the second track on an album to kick even more ass than the first track, and that’s just what happens in Crash and Burn!

The lyrics set the scene in Falling Down and now we cut away in cinematic terms to a very dramatic sequence of the story. Once again the human race is in dire straits. The Koreans are at war, the Middle Eastern Muslim states have banded together to form the United Islamic alliance, the planet is beset with ecological problems, and the world banking system has all but collapsed. Business as usual!

There has been a terrorist bombing at the United Nations where several of the Worlds’ leaders and diplomats have been killed or maimed.
Meanwhile, far away the Atlantean’s who placed us here in the beginning, and who 25,000 years ago had to intervene to save our prehistory advanced civilisation from destruction do not like what they see going on here on their “ Ant Farm”. They have dispatched a Sentinel to come and sort out the mess, or if necessary wind up the experiment.

Meanwhile many of the world’s leaders are gathered together in a safe place for a crisis summit. They’re all on board Air Force one heading for Cairo, and a meeting with the United Islamic Alliance. The Sentinel, en route to Earth sees an immediate opportunity to take control. He will “cut off their heads with one single blow”.

We wanted this track to be total chaos and to try and capture the fear and panic on board Air Force One as the Sentinels’ craft rips through a wing sending most of the world’s leaders plummeting earthward…….

I absolutely love the manic feel of this track ! We wrote it very much as a jam once we had discussed what we are trying to convey musically, and we’ve managed to capture the original insanity, and have enhanced it in the studio. Ron’s barking dog keyboard sound on the end section is totally crazy and inspired. I just love the growling Hammond organ, and the frenetic guitar work. Colin and I don’t do too badly either!

Lyrics

Talk all we do is talk
All we do is scream, scream

Peace, we dream of peace
But it’s impossible

Learn, we never seem to learn
How can we always get it so wrong

We’re living in hope
One day we’ll all join as one….

Five miles high in a sanctuary sky
The shakers and movers conduct their manoeuvres
Like Gods on Olympus so safe in this place….
The dove hunts the eagle

Unseen, up on high, from an alien sky
Like a flash of blue lightning
A power that is frightening
To cut off his head with just one single blow……….
The dove takes the eagle
